The Story Behind the Photo
Award Winning Author - Kamal Al-Solaylee
Over the past few days, I’ve been watching the news about the devastating fires in Los Angeles, and my heart aches for everyone affected. Amid the chaos, families have shared how grateful they are to have their loved ones and pets safe. Yet, in interviews, many have also expressed the pain of what they left behind—some relieved they managed to save their photos and keepsakes, while others regret not being able to take their children’s artwork, treasured photos, or other special mementos. Hearing these stories makes me reflect on the choices we would all have to make in such a moment. My cat, Blossom, would be my first priority, along with my photos—especially the photo my grandmother gave me as a little girl in half of a locket with a picture of my mother as a little girl, along with her two older sisters, all of whom are no longer with us. This photo is now over 90 years old. What would you take if you had only minutes to decide? What memories or items hold the most meaning in your life? Although we might never face a situation as devastating as what is happening in LA, we each could still have a fire, flood, or other disaster that could destroy our home. We often don’t think about the importance of our memories until it’s too late. This is why now is the time to think about what we would save and how we can protect what matters most. This isn’t just a question for those directly impacted by the fires—it’s a call for all of us to think about safeguarding the things that connect us to our past, our loved ones, and our stories. Whether it’s scanning a few favorite photos, photographing special mementos, or organizing your keepsakes, every small action today can bring peace of mind tomorrow. Take a moment to reflect on what matters most to you. Your memories deserve a safe place, and it’s never too early to start. When you’re ready, I’d love to help you take that first step.
